How Often Does an AC Actually Need Gas Refilling?

A sealed AC system doesn't consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes oil. If a unit needs gas refilling every year, that's not routine maintenance — it's a sign of a slow leak somewhere in the coil or pipe joints.

A correctly sealed system should hold its gas charge for years. The only times a refill is legitimately needed are: after a repair that required opening the sealed system, after installation, or once a leak has been found and fixed.

If a technician offers to 'top up the gas' without checking for a leak first, that's a symptom being treated rather than the cause. Ask for a leak check with the refill.
